PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium: players are angry and let it know

PlayStation more extra and premium services seduce players less and less, and some are starting to cringe. We explain why.

Launched with great promises, the PlayStation Plus Premium was to be the ultimate offer for retro and cloud gaming fans. But in May 2025, enthusiasm clearly fell. Between lean updates, slowness in the addition of classics and lack of emblematic major titles, more and more subscribers ask the same question: What is the premium level really?

An addition that does not dream for the PlayStation more premium

This month, only one new retro game appears in the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog, Battle Engine Aquila. An FPS released on PS2, sympathetic but quite obscure. Not frankly enough to vibrate nostalgic. And above all, not enough to justify a subscription which costs around 25 € more per year than the extra level. On the one hand, Sony does offer some good retro titles this year, as Media welfare 2 or the ancients Armored Core. But at this rate, difficult to feel a real momentum. The catalog grows, certainly, but too slowly.

For many, PS more premium’s heart had to be this famous “library of classics”. But in reality, the pace of publication is too slow. In five months, only a handful of retro games were added. And most are far from essential.

During this time, Nintendo regularly enriches its offer with known titles, such as Wario Land 4 or Fatal Fury 2. Enough to cringe, especially in those who have been waiting for months to games like Jak II, The Getaway ou Ape Escape 2.

Cloud and VR are not enough

Sony also relies on other advantages to justify the price of the more premium PlayStation, the cloud gaming, full game tests, or some PSVR2 additions. All this works rather well, and some players find their account in these options. But in fact, This is not what the majority of premium subscribers are looking for. What they want is solid retro, emblematic titles, and above all, regularity in additions. This is clearly not the case today.

On forums and social networks, the testimonies of disappointed subscribers are multiplying. Many announce that they will go to the extra offer, or even return to the Essential. Others simply prefer to buy the few retro games that are really interested.
