Announced three years ago by Square Enix, Just Cause 5 has since been particularly discreet. And obviously, that doesn’t bode well for the project.
It is starting to have a good time now that we haven’t heard of Just Cause. Indeed, since the release of Just Cause 4 Overall in 2018, the Avalanche Studios franchise remained particularly discreet. It must also be said that the last opus is far from being a great success, both critically and commercially. However, as confirmed by Square Enix in May 2022, this obviously did not prevent the publisher from ordering a fifth opus. A fifth opus which, ultimately, could never see the light of day.
Just cause 5 canceled by Square Enix?
This is in any case what Marcus Reynolds indicates, an old developer from Sumo Digital, on his Linkedin profile. Indeed, to believe the different experiences mentioned by the latter, he would have worked as the main game designer and feature team lead on Just Cause 5 Between July 2021 and July 2023. His mission, in particular, was then to direct the team in charge of vehicle functionality which, as we know, occupy an important place in the gaming experience.
Nevertheless, which mainly draws attention is the mention “Now canceled” Affixed just behind the name of Just Cause 5. Because while Square Enix has still not ruled on the evolution of the project for all these years, this could be confirmation that the title is ultimately no longer in the publisher’s pipes. And it is not the only surprising information to remember from the profile of Reynolds, which, as mentioned above, was an employee from Sumo Digital. However, so far, the games have always been designed by Avalanche.
What should we deduce from it? What just cause 5 had been entrusted to another studio by Square Enix? Or that development was provided by the two teams in collaboration? As it stands, it remains difficult to say. We know, however, that Avalanche is at work on her next title, Contrabandsince 2021, and it is likely that this has impacted the role of the studio in the project. Moreover, at the same period, Sumo Digital began to recruit staff for a title belonging to “A well -established open -world action AAA franchise”. Coincidence? Probably not.
The publisher keeps silence on the situation
Anyway, everything brings to believe that Just Cause 5 now belongs to the past. But at a time when these lines are written, Square Enix has still not officially ruled on the issue. And knowing the current position of the firm on its Western franchises which, like Tomb Raider For example, for many have been sold in recent years, this has still been concerned about. Hopefully that a point will not be long in happening, a story that we are finally fixed on this whole story.
