While Ciri’s arrival as a protagonist continues to debate, a developer of The Witcher 4 returns to the reasons for this choice and explains why it was a logical evolution for the franchise.
It is definitely not unemployed at CD Projekt Red at the moment. While the studio is currently preparing to launch update 2.3 of Cyberpunk 2077which will follow the arrival of the game on Nintendo Switch 2, there is also an opportunity to put forward its next title under development: The Witcher 4. A title which, as soon as it is announced to Game Awards 2024made players react a lot because of its change of protagonist. But one of the developers assures it: this choice was obvious, and everyone will understand it at the end of the game.
CD Projekt looks back on the change of heroes of The Witcher 4
Indeed, on the occasion of an interview carried out by Gamesradar+, Jan Hermanowicz said that “When the game is released, you can see by yourself and adopt fully [le personnage de Ciri]its story “. Because yes, for those who have missed information, it is no longer Geralt but Ciri who will act as a playable character in The Witcher 4. A change which is not to everyone’s taste, but on which the manager of the recent engineering production technical demo then invite to take a step back.
“I think that is when you have to make an opinion and make decisions” naturally adds Hermanowicz. “We have shown it in different situations, in two very distinct emotional states from each other. And there are many, many other parts of her that we will show in the future ”. In other words: do not sell the skin of the bear before having killed it, because The Witcher 4 is still very far from having delivered all its secrets. For players, the adventure is even just starting.
A logical evolution
In addition to the ridiculous controversies linked to his physique and/or his legitimacy in occupying the main role as a woman, on which we will not return, Ciri’s choice for The Witcher 4 has notably been debated for some fans for questions from Lore. “Read the damn books” then replied Doug Cockle, the interpreter of Geralt in The Witcher 3on this subject, in order to make the most recalcitrant understand that it was in reality a logical evolution in the history of the franchise created by Andrzej Sapkowski.
Words today dubbed by Hermanowicz, who adds for his part: “For me, personally, by reading the books, it is very clear that the story slowly goes from Geralt’s story to Ciri’s story, sometimes told through Geralt’s eyes”. It is also precisely for this reason that CD Projekt decided several years ago already to follow the same scheme with The Witcher 4. “This is how it will happen. And you will see in the game how it will happen ”.
For that, we will however have to take his pain in patience, because the release of The Witcher 4 is not expected before 2027 at the earliest. But as we could show us the Polish studio very recently, he intends to put the package to impress fans and conquer the hearts of new players in passing. We just hope that the lessons of the Cyberpunk 2077 case were selected, and that it will not have the eyes bigger than the belly again.
