Sometimes it only takes a whole story to change. This is exactly the case with these new revelations around the cult episode of Final Fantasy: FF9.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Ff9Square Enix returned behind the scenes of this JRPG classic. And one thing is certain: some decisions made at the time could have completely changed the way in which players live the end of the game. A new video accompanied by interviews reveals things in the end. What make you want even more than one FF9 Remake.
A different ending for FF9
In the version we know, the end of FF9 is marked by a touching narration, often interpreted as the last words of Vivi. This endearing character, aware of his short lifetime, leaves behind a message full of emotion. We then see what the other members of the group become, while Vivi is absent, only his children appear on the screen.
But according to Hideo Minaba, artistic director on the game FF9, The narrator was originally to be Kuja. A choice that would have completely changed the tone of the final. Kuja is a complex character, but also an antagonist with violent acts. Giving him the floor at the end would perhaps have made it possible to humanize his last moments … but would probably also have made the moment much less moving.
A change that has changed everything
Finally, it’s good Vivi which was chosen to close the FF9 history. And in hindsight, it was probably the best decision. This last message, melancholy but soft, gives a real depth to the conclusion of the game. It also offers a striking end, without doing too much.
As for Kuja, his destiny remains deliberately vague in FF9. We understand that he dies after the final fight, but without direct confirmation. If he had been the narrator, it would have clearly decided on his fate … but to the detriment of emotion. Another revelation: Necronthe final boss of the FF9 game was not the first choice of developers. Several ideas have been explored, including Hades and even a Incarnation of death. More concrete options, but ultimately abandoned for a more symbolic approach.
