Surprise: Disney+ is preparing a new series inspired by a cult license that is unexpected to say the least. There is clearly enough to offer a very nice program to subscribers.
Disney+ tackles a project that is unexpected to say the least: a series adaptation of the comics Afterlife With Archie. A daring bet, since this version transforms the colorful world of Riverdale into a true post-apocalyptic nightmare. This is truly a cult license.
A horrific version for Disney+
Forget high school romances and intrigues. In Afterlife With Archie, the peaceful streets of Riverdale become the scene of a zombie outbreak. The iconic characters, Archie, Betty, Veronica and even Jughead, must now survive in a devastated world, far from their usual adventures.
As explained Deadlinethis project marks the return of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasacreator of Riverdale and The New Adventures of Sabrina. Here he finds his favorite universe, but from a much darker angle. The screenwriter will not be alone, he is once again joining forces with Greg Berlantithe producer behind a multitude of hit series like The Flash ou You. A promising collaboration, which announces an adaptation faithful to the spirit of the comics while adding a modern touch.
A project already well underway
Disney+ is not content with just a simple pilot. The platform has already ordered a full season, proof of its confidence in the project. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will also executive produce, alongside Jimmy Gibbons, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman et Jon Goldwater from Archie Comics Studios. Suffice to say that fans can expect a solid production, with creators who know their raw material perfectly.
Released in 2013, Afterlife With Archie was a real slap in the face for readers. Imagined by Aguirre-Sacasa and drawn by Francesco Francavillathe series mixed horror, drama and nostalgia. Originally, it all started as a simple alternative cover inspired by zombie films. The concept was so popular that it became a series in its own right, paving the way for a dedicated label: Archie Horror.
Disney+ changes tone
With this adaptation, Disney+ shows a new facet of its strategy. The streaming giant, often associated with family productions, no longer hesitates to explore darker and more mature genres. Afterlife With Archie could well mark a turning point and appeal to an audience fond of horror and nostalgia.
For the moment, no release date has been announced. But one thing is certain, seeing Riverdale invaded by the undead is likely to arouse the curiosity of many fans. And if the result lives up to the comics, Afterlife With Archie could well become one of the most exciting surprises of the year on Disney+.
