PS5: this highly requested feature since its release should finally become reality

Five years after its release, the PS5 finally seems to be able to offer players a much-requested feature, even if it does not yet go through official channels.

All creators will tell you: if the PS3 today occupies a beautiful place in the hearts of gamers, who saw the birth of emblematic games such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, God of War 3, GTA 5 and more, it still remained a real development headache. So much so that even today, its architecture continues to cause a lot of problems for PlayStation when we talk about emulation. And yet, five years after its release, it seems that the PS5 is finally able to run its first PS3 game in native version.

This highly requested feature on PS5 has finally become reality?

Indeed, as reported in video by the Mystic channel on YouTube, it appears that the company RedoApps, specialized in emulation and software intended to fill the gaps between different hardware, has managed to set up an emulator capable of running a first PS3 game natively on PS5: Cloudberry Kingdom. Does this name mean nothing to you? Don’t worry, it’s somewhat normal. It is in reality a small platform game with confidential success, which is no longer available for sale outside of Asia.

However, the most interesting thing in this story naturally remains less the identity of the game in question than the fact that RedoApps managed to make a PS3 title fully backwards compatible on PS5, and this without going through the cloud like the PS Plus. So of course, the presence of small problems remains to be highlighted. However, this in no way takes away from the feat achieved by the company, which thus gives a bit of hope to many players about the idea of seeing, perhaps one day, the PS5 bring back some of the most emblematic titles of the PS3.

Of course, this small victory should not distract us from the reality, which is that porting PS3 titles to Sony’s latest machine remains particularly difficult. Including for the founders of RedoApps, who did not fail to emphasize in the columns of Digital Foundry that each title compatible with the emulator will have to be worked on case by case to ensure the best possible quality on PS5. A long-term task, therefore, which risks proving all the more difficult for the biggest games from this generation.

You will have to be patient, very patient

At the time of writing, RedoApps claims to be working on the port of ten PS3 games, including Cloudberry Kingdom. There would also be several AAAs, the names of which the company prefers to keep quiet for the moment. “We plan to start by targeting indie titles, but ultimately we want to revive all games from the PS3 era. From indie titles like Cloudberry Kingdom to blockbuster AAA titles » said Sayed Mahmood Alawai, one of the founders of RedoApps.

This should delight the most nostalgic, especially at a time when PlayStation seems to have definitively abandoned the idea of native emulation of PS3 games on PS5. Unless the matter is still under study with a view to releasing the PS6 ? The future will tell us. In the meantime, you will nevertheless have to be patient to give RedoApps time to work its magic, and be content with the few titles offered by PlayStation in the cloud version via the Premium offer of its PS Plus.
