In development for more than ten years, Squadron 42, the single-player game from the creators of Star Citizen, has now passed very important stages of its development.

Squadron 42 reconfirms its release for 2026

Indeed, as if Star Citizen was not enough, Cloud Imperium Games has also decided to launch into a single-player spin-off of the space MMO which, originally, was announced for release in 2014. But here we are more than ten years later, still without any real news from Squadron 42 which, as Chris Roberts assures us, is nevertheless progressing very well. “We are confident in the direction the game is taking and we are fully focused on making it happen” said the studio boss in a long letter published on the studio’s official website.

“We know many of you are eager to play it, and we can’t wait to get it in your hands. We are not planning a long marketing campaign [pour Squadron 42]as we’ve already released our fair share of trailers and gameplay previews. When the time comes, you (and the rest of the games industry) will hear a lot more from us.” Roberts then concludes. As for this “time comes”In fact, it remains maintained for 2026, without further details immediately.

The studio reveals the major progress of the project

It must be said that as the boss of Cloud Imperium reveals in his letter, Squadron 42 has evolved significantly during the year 2025. “All chapters are now fully playable from start to finish, and we ourselves have played the game regularly” he confides. A game which, again according to the creator, currently has a lifespan of more than forty hours, and which promises to be “exceptional once the final tweaks, optimizations and bug fixes have been made”.

“A big part of what makes this possible is the technology we’ve developed at Cloud Imperium over the years. The ability to seamlessly go from walking to a vehicle in which you can fly and travel to a planet or through star systems, all without a loading screen, creates a level of immersion that is very difficult to replicate.” says Roberts. “This combination of close interaction and galactic scale is at the heart of what will make Squadron 42 so unique”.

However, the Star Citizen studio attaches just as much importance to the quality of the game’s content. “From the writing, to the motion capture, to the characters, environments, ships, lighting, sound, cutscenes and design, I’m extremely proud of the level of care that went into everything.
