Thanks to recent unexpected results even from Square Enix around Final Fantasy, a game that fans have dreamed of for over 30 years now finally officially has a chance to exist.
Despite its legendary status, Final Fantasy has been experiencing signs of slowing down for some time. The last numbered episodes have indeed had their share of highs and very lows, and even the excellent FF7 Remake et Rebirth did not show the results Square Enix expected. The Japanese giant, however, was treated to a pleasant surprise with the latest game in the franchise, which precisely exceeded the publisher’s expectations. To the point that he gives the green light for a project awaited for more than 30 years? Such a chance may in any case now exist.
A new chronicle in sight for a long-forgotten monument of Final Fantasy?
Originally released in 1997 on PS1 and still considered a legendary classic of the console, Final Fantasy Tactics, which we thought for a long time doomed to oblivion, has against all expectations been given a nice makeover thanks to The Ivalice Chroniclesreleased on September 30, 2025 on a plethora of platforms. In addition to bringing a graphical facelift to this PS1 landmark, the title has received a myriad of improvements to modernize the experience, as well as a top-notch voice cast to bring one of the franchise’s most thrilling stories to life.
Given the great age of the original game, however, Square Enix and its original director, Yasumi Matsuno, did not expect to make many sales. However, in a recent press release (in Japanese), the publisher announced that The Ivalice Chronicles surpassed one million sales just three months after its release. While those concerned thought that it would not reach such a threshold before 2028. « The entire development team is grateful to you from the bottom of our hearts. In order to share the joy, create a better experience and encourage more people to play, we plan to update the game in the future said Kazutoyo Maehiro, director of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles.
Beyond future updates to the title, this could also give Square Enix some ideas. Like for example giving the green light to a sequel to Final Fantasy Tacticsonce considered for PC and consoles, but which fans of the original game have been desperately waiting for for years. It is now the turn of the Japanese publisher to make an important tactical choice.
