Almost three years after its release, Resident Evil 4 Remake continues to reveal some of its secrets to us with the discovery of a new chapter abandoned by Capcom.
All developers will tell you: developing a game is far from being a smooth ride. While many ideas are put on paper, only a portion of them are usually destined to come to fruition, while all the others are ultimately left aside. But it also sometimes happens that among those who were lucky enough to see the light of day, some are abandoned along the way. And after The Last of Us Part 2it is now the turn of Resident Evil 4 Remake to prove it to us.
An Abandoned Resident Evil 4 Remake Chapter Resurfaces
As with the Naughty Dog game, Capcom’s hit was in fact scrutinized by a modder and content creator, Michael ‘Thekempy’ Kemp, who then brought to light an interesting discovery: that of a “Chapter 0”. Because yes, before the player is required to take control of Leon in the first chapter of Resident Evil 4 Remake, Capcom had obviously planned an introductory chapter featuring Ashley, the president’s daughter, prey to the Illuminados after they had carried out one of their ritual sacrifices.
« [Resident Evil 4 Remake] was supposed to start with Ashley in the woods in the middle of the night” explains Thekempy. “She must have chanced upon the Illuminados while they were performing a ritual sacrifice”. In any case, this is what the game files reveal, which the modder partly managed to restore despite the fact that they are incomplete. “There are still several locations of scripted events that were supposed to happen in this chapter” he reveals in particular, with supporting video evidence.
In addition to a new game area, inaccessible in the final version of Resident Evil 4 Remake, this allows us to have an idea of the path planned by Capcom originally, in addition to the progress of certain events thanks to the scripts left in the files. For example, there was obviously a touch of infiltration, but also a chase with the Ganados and a chance meeting with Luis, while he was being kidnapped by the latter. Enough to further deepen the lore of Resident Evil 4 Remake, therefore.

At this point, however, it is unknown what could have caused Capcom to delete the entire chapter. Was it due to lack of time? Or more simply because the studio felt that it was not essential to the adventure? Perhaps one day we will have the chance to discover the answer. In the meantime, however, the studio remains fully focused on finalizing Resident Evil Requiemwhich is expected to be released on February 27. A new opus which, as a reminder, will once again feature Leon alongside Grace.
