Maxis held its first speaking engagement of the year. Faced with rumors, the studio shares a glimpse of the future of The Sims. Yes, plans have changed since Project Rene was announced.
Sims news has been full of uncertainty lately. At the end of 2025, the rumor broke: Maxis would be working on an improved version of Sims 4halfway between the new game and the remaster. Reputable sources within the community agree that EA has decided to review its plans for the future of the license: Project Rene would no longer be the representative of the future of The Sims, but one experience among others. The single-player component would then have been isolated in a brand new episode which would gradually replace The Sims 4.
It would thus offer a rejuvenated technical base to teams, and therefore greater ease in resolving bugs internally, as well as better graphics and a better overall experience for players. At least that’s what the rumors say. One of the brand’s community managers had warned that Maxis would communicate more about its plans at the start of the year, and the studio half-heartedly confirms the latest leaks.
The Sims 4.5 is officially confirmed
These last few weeks have been eventful for the Sims community, which zigzags between rumors, speculations and official announcements around the famous Sims Project The opportunity for the studio to reaffirm its values and its positions (although rumors speak of an African world thrown in the trash by EA), to confirm that Project Rene will only be a mobile experience more tailored to multiplayer and that The Sims 4 will soon receive DLC on the theme of royalty. This roadmap above all confirms “the next evolution” of The Sims 4, a catch-all term which half-heartedly confirms the new game, known internally as Project The Sims 4.5 by the community.
Maxis seems to remain deliberately vague for this 2026 roadmap and for good reason. Difficult for the studio to freely reveal all its plans when at least one major DLC is planned in the following month for The Sims 4. EA must give its future paid content a chance to shine and difficult to create hype if the community must already begin to say goodbye to the game. The roadmap nevertheless mentions several times “a family of new experiences” distributed between PC, mobile and consoles, suggesting that all these beautiful people would coexist together, just like “updates regular” for the currently active single-player game.
No Sims 5, but a new experience?
However, the studio has confirmed that half of the staff allocated to the single-player component of the license is now working not only on the fourth episode, but on “its next evolution” as well. Put more clearly, the transition to The Sims 4.5 is officially confirmed.
“At its core, The Sims was designed as a deep life simulation, full of rich mechanics, strong stories, and which offers true freedom to the player. This core will not change. We will continue to roll out content and new updates for The Sims 4, and we are committed to improving the experience. Single-player experiences, on PC and consoles, are part of our future, with more than half of our global team dedicated to The Sims 4 and the next evolution of the license. More information in the coming months.

What will this “next evolution” be?
Project Rene will therefore not be the successor to The Sims 4, but a side experience, which should further compensate for the closure of the mobile game. According to rumor, The Sims 4.5 would actually take the basis of Rene’s single-player mechanics and graft them to the base of the currently active game. An open world, more lively neighborhoods, graphics in the vein of the very first presentation would thus be expected.
And while we should clearly not expect a dazzling evolution worthy of Sims 5with these features alone, the game could offer a real breath of fresh air to a game that has been swimming in its juice for 10 years. The lack of an open world and the aging technology a few years after the release of the fourth episode are indeed among the biggest criticisms made of the game. However, we will have to wait until after the release of the DLC The Sims 4 Royalty and Legacythe official announcement of which will be made this week.
