The Expanse really has everything a Mass Effect fan’s dream game is, it promises to be huge

While waiting to hear from Mass Effect 5, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn puts stars in our eyes while the developers talk to us about the game.

Last week, the first conference of the year was broadcast with the New Game+ Showcase which, unfortunately, had a hard time convincing the public due to its pace. However, this still allowed us to learn more about many titles, such as The Division 3Aphelion ou Starfinder Afterlight For example. And it turns out that the latter was not the only big RPG present during the evening, which also saw the very promising The Expanse: Osiris Reborn benefit from beautiful lighting.

The Expanse Osiris Reborn puts stars in our eyes

Indeed, the Owlcat Games title was entitled to a segment of almost fifty minutes, during which Leonid Rastorguev and Yuliya Chernenko, respectively director and producer of game design, had the opportunity to speak at length, in depth and across the game. The opportunity then for us to learn more about the objectives of the studio, which definitely does not lack ambition with The Expanse. You only need to look at the list of titles from which he wishes to draw inspiration to realize this.

Because of Mass Effect to Final Fantasy, through The Last of Us, Persona or even Gears of War, it is clear that the creators of the game have tried to get the best from some of the greatest works of video games. This will then result in an experience lasting around 30 to 40 hours which, like any good RPG, will be full of choices for the player to make. And if The Expanse will be careful not to warn him of this when the time comes, the consequences can sometimes be perceived very clearly, both on the environments and on the characters.

Moreover, Owlcat Games already promises us a deep story, where each companion has their own background with their own factions, their personal battles and their dedicated objectives. The player is free to take part or not, with all the consequences – good or bad – that this may entail. Because if romances will indeed be possible in The Expanse, it will also be possible to see our companions disapprove of our decisions, or lose their lives during the adventure.

One of the most promising future RPGs?

Of course, the Owlcat Games title will not be left out in terms of gameplay either. In addition to an obviously rather advanced character creator, the studio also promises a certain flexibility in handling. Because despite the presence of certain pre-sets linked to character classes, players are still encouraged to test different weapons, skills and other gadgets before making their final decision. After which, however, The Expanse will invite you to stick with it.

Finally, Rastorguev and Chernenko seem to announce an experiment “more down to earth” than many RPGs of the genre, with a visibly more realistic use of technology, weapons, ships and even space travel. However, this will not prevent players from having a lot to explore, or even being able to engage in several activities on the different planets. In short, a lot of interesting promises, which confirm that The Expanse is a game to watch closely despite the absence of a release window.
