The Elder Scrolls 6 will soon celebrate ten years since its announcement, but according to this developer, you shouldn’t expect a quick release. It could well be that the game will take even longer before seeing the light of day.
And The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced so long ago, it was mostly to quench fans’ thirst. “I always thought that this announcement (in 2018) was mainly about Starfieldbut like Skyrim had been out for a very long time, we had to satisfy the players,” explains Purkeypile. At the time, the game was presented at the same time as Starfield and it was the latter which pulled the plug until its release, 5 years later, in 2023. As you will have understood, the intensive development of The Elder Scrolls 6 only began late after its announcement and it is obviously not close to arriving.
“I imagine they will take time before releasing it”estimates the former artistic director. According to him, this time, Bethesda is no longer afraid of falling behind unlike before. “There is less economic pressure on releasing The Elder Scrolls 6 on a specific date, but more on making sure it is good”explains Nate Purkeypile. The Elder Scrolls is a very well established license now and the fans are legion. Everyone knows full well that, no matter when the game is released, like big licenses like GTA, players are there.
That being said, if The Elder Scrolls 6 does not meet all expectations, if it is full of bugs or poorly optimized, there is a very good chance that this will impact sales upon release. Especially at a time like ours, where everything is moving very (too) quickly with the hyper activity of social networks. For Purkeypile, Bethesda is well aware of this this time, unlike in the days of Skyrim. He specifies that at that time, Bethesda had given a fixed date and the developers had to stick to it, which was a huge pressure.
A release not before 2028?
Now, at a time when postponements have become commonplace, even when a date is announced, there is no longer this pressure and developers can therefore polish their baby until the end. In any case, on paper, since in reality, there are necessarily schedules to keep, however flexible they may be. The Elder Scrolls 6 could take its time for a while longer. The announcement of the game will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2028 and by then it is clearly not sure that the game will be released. It seems unlikely that it will be close, even though the fans were fired up after the last Xbox speech. Bethesda knows how huge the wait is. After a Starfield which has greatly divided and a Skyrim which has only multiplied ports since its release more than 14 years ago, the pressure is therefore enormous.
