Red Dead Redemption gave itself a little brush up last December with a free update… which Xbox is now obliged to reimburse players.
At a time of rumors around PS5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Red Dead Redemption 2Rockstar has gone against all expectations. The publisher of GTA 6 announced, to everyone’s surprise, such versions, but of the first game. As tradition dictates, these should have been free for everyone who owns the base game. Everything did not go as planned, and today many players are getting refunds.
Red Dead Redemption refunded for some Xbox players
On December 2, 2025, Rockstar deployed the free RDR upgrades for all owners of the game on older console generations. The majority of players were able to take the opportunity to rediscover this masterpiece in its best light, but not Xbox users. They quickly faced reality: it was impossible for them to upgrade the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption to the Xbox Series without paying to obtain it. Many held back and waited for a fix to what was confirmed to be a bug, but despite Rockstar’s efforts, nothing happened. The most impatient, on the other hand, went to checkout, even though they already had the game on X360.
Aware of the problem, Xbox has started to reimburse owners of the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption who had purchased the upgrade in the meantime. One by one, affected users all received automatic refund notifications, sometimes hidden in spam. The reason given is simple: the Xbox Series version was supposed to be a free upgrade. The process seems gradual, so don’t panic if you’re affected and still haven’t received anything. If your account hasn’t been replenished by the end of the week, a quick message to Xbox customer service explaining the “deal” with the free Red Dead Redemption update should suffice. As a reminder, the latter offers above all slightly improved graphics and above all better performance.
