Without warning, Sony delisted nearly 1,200 games from its PlayStation Store, thus eliminating the fourth largest publisher on the platform. And that’s very good news.
Every year, thousands of games are published on different platforms and their online stores. Whether on PS5Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch or even PC, all are naturally full of titles set to become very popular with gamers, but also in some cases nuggets unfairly destined to slip under the radar. The problem is that there is also a lot of “shovelware” hidden in the mix, namely scams instigated by money-hungry publishers. And the PlayStation Store has obviously just chased away a big one.
PlayStation Store’s fourth biggest publisher banned
But what is “shovelware”, you may ask? They are simply poor quality games, hastily designed with minimal resources just to attract players to rake in money. Scams, to put it another way. And whether it is on the PlayStation Storethe Microsoft Store, the Nintendo eShop or other stores like Steam and the Epic Games Store, it is unfortunately full of them on all sides, the fault of insufficiently effective controls on the part of the various manufacturers at this level.
However, as revealed by Australian streamer RobThanatos on We’re talking about a total of 1,194 games, which you’ve probably never heard of until now, which says a lot. And suffice to say that this is a great achievement for the firm, because without it being apparent, ThiGames then established itself as the fourth largest publisher on the PlayStation Store.
Unsurprisingly, the players’ response to this information was not long in coming. “Well… These ‘games’ are for people who want easy platinum trophies and nothing else” underlines for example an Internet user on Reddit. “Thank God, finally!” NOW, [le PlayStation Store] needs to start removing the millions of ’empty’ simulation games that have AI-generated thumbnails and are just plagiarized copies of the most popular game of the month on Steam” assures another, supported by a third who hopes for a ban on “this AI shit” on the blind.
A scourge that affects everyone
All that remains now is to hope that others will follow the example of the PlayStation Store, and in particular Nintendo and its eShop full of this shovelware intended to deceive players. “Every once in a while, I scroll through the Nintendo eShop ‘Coming Soon’ list just for fun, and like, literally 95% of what’s in there is shovelware, AI crap, and outright plagiarism. It’s crazy” wonders a user on this subject. In the meantime, PlayStation players can enjoy a slightly cleaner store.
