In the soft launch phase for several years, Ragnarok X: Next Generation is officially launching its open beta, while success is already there for the MMORPG.
With the official opening of its Open Beta in Europe, Middle East and Russia on January 14, 2026, Ragnarok X: Next Generation continues its slow, but methodical, world tour. Another launch for this free mobile MMORPG which, casually, already boasts more than 25 million players globally. A figure that makes you dizzy, but which is not necessarily surprising when you look at the trajectory of a title based on one of the most cherished licenses in the history of online role-playing games. Because Ragnarok, for a whole generation of PC gamers from the early 2000s, it is first and foremost a pixelated Proust madeleine.
A colorful universe, catchy music, hours spent typing Poring to grab one more level. ROX Global presents itself as the modern heir of this DNA, with the stated ambition of reconciling nostalgia and the constraints of contemporary mobile gaming. So far, the formula seems to be working: crowned “Best Game of the Year” on Google Play in several Asian territories, the game has also successfully established itself on the American continent in 2025.
This arrival in Europe, the Middle East and Russia follows a phase of soft launch clearly well exploited by the Ragnarok X: Next Generation teams, who say they have refined their proposal by listening to feedback from different communities. Unsurprisingly, what stands out above all is the fundamentals of old-school MMORPG : a legible progression, but which respects the player and his time, dungeons requiring a minimum of coordination and, above all, a dense social fabric thanks to the guild system. Values that Ragnarok X: Next Generation intends to put at the center of the experience.
On paper, the main argument of the title remains its entirely player-driven economy. Here, no loot locked behind a wall of microtransactions: equipment, improvement materials and cosmetics can all be obtained in-game, via quests, dungeons or side activities. The Exchange Center, a true integrated marketplace, allows players to set the prices of their finds themselves, in a system governed by supply and demand, for a minimum fee. A mechanic that recalls the glorious days of PC MMORPG auction houses, and which contrasts with certain excesses of mobile gaming.
Between an economic model that respects players and a strong social dimension
Another argument in favor of the feverish success of Ragnarok X: Next Generation: the total synergy between free and premium currencies. Diamonds (paid currency) and Crystals (free) are exchanged freely, allowing the most invested players to finance their progress, or even make profits, without ever taking out their credit card. A promise of “true free-to-play”, counterbalanced by some optional expenses to accelerate progress, which will obviously need to be tested over time, but which leaves the player his choice of approach: grind or spend. Everyone finds themselves there.
But Ragnarok X: Next Generation’s success isn’t just limited to stat optimization. Faithful to the community spirit of the license, the game relies heavily on social interactions : guilds, couple system with grand weddings, shared skills and dedicated mounts… It’s all there. Added to this is generous customization, between neat costumes, crazy headgear and frames oscillating between the cute and the absurd. Enough to liven up the places of Midgard and feed social networks thanks to a well-integrated photo mode. It now remains to be seen whether this new step will allow ROX Global to maintain its success and balance in the long term. The gates of Midgard are open, and as always with Ragnarok, the true justice of the peace will be the community. You can download now Ragnarok X: Next Generation on iOS and Android, directly from the official website or from your smartphone or tablet.
