Avatar 3 confirms its failure despite its success. Results below expectations which still put the next films in the license at risk.
Avatar 3 is coming slowly, but surely, to the end of the race and the predictions were really right. If it is necessarily a success when compared to most other films, given the aura and size of the franchise, Avatar 3 of Fire and Ash can be seen as a failure.
Avatar 3 will never do better than the previous ones, it won’t even be on the podium
Broadcast in cinemas since December 17, 2025, Avatar 3 of Fire and Ash did not win over the public as expected. It is obviously the biggest release of the end of the year, well ahead of the competition and not everyone can boast of reaping more than a billion dollars in profits. The film is currently at 1.322 billion dollars in cumulative revenue: 367 million in the United States and more than 955 million in the rest of the world. The film should therefore end its run around 1.5 billion, as predictions suggested. It’s a sum, but it’s not enough to climb the podium of the biggest successes in the history of cinema.
Even if we want to try to contextualize, Avatar 3 missed the boat. Critics are quite divided regarding it, with some finding it too similar to the previous film which was itself very similar to the first. A repetition which is also confirmed in the writing and the direction. Fortunately, the visual clearly manages to raise the level without breaking the ceiling. The surprise effect is no longer there, but the pleasure of discovery and letting go in this colorful and absolutely superb imaginary world still works just as well.
It’s still uncertain for the next films
This world is vast, there is still a lot left for us to discover. At least two other films were planned, and had been for a very long time. If we go back a few years, James Cameron did not lack desire and was already selling us dreams. A discourse which has gradually changed, to the point of becoming a huge question mark now. Currently, it is not known whether Avatar 4 et 5 will see the light of day. According to the director, the story started with the first film is now concluded. If there is a sequel, it would be to tell something else, a new narrative arc. In any case, he affirms for the moment that the films have not yet been validated. He himself doesn’t yet know where he’s going to go, especially since he should get to work on the next Terminator and fans are also waiting for a potential Alita 2.
