The Elder Scrolls 6: after 8 years, new official revelations that will cast a chill

While The Elder Scrolls 6 continues to be painfully awaited, new revelations from a former Bethesda developer are surprising on the situation.

In a few months, it will already be eight years since The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced and yet the shadow of the latter still does not seem ready to appear on the horizon. It must also be said that between the release of Fallout 76 in 2018, then that of Starfield in 2023, Bethesda has not had time to be bored in recent years. Much to the chagrin of The Elder Scrolls fans, however, who can no longer stand being left in the dark for so long. And unfortunately these latest declarations are not going to fix things.

Indeed, during a recent interview for PC Gamer, Kurt Kuhlmann, ex-employee of Bethesda, indulged in numerous confidences on the case of The Elder Scrolls 6. The opportunity in particular to learn that the plans changed a lot along the way, since it was originally planned that the latter would be the direct successor to Fallout 4. In any case, this is what was initially planned. “verbally promised” Todd Howard to the screenwriter, who was then to serve as lead designer on the project.

“Of course, after Fallout 4, we didn’t move on to The Elder Scrolls 6” nevertheless specifies Kuhlmann. “We did Fallout 76, and then we still didn’t move on to The Elder Scrolls 6 but to Starfield, which became an extremely long project compared to the others. So from my perspective, I waited for about 11 years to be the manager on [le jeu] » he explains. “It wasn’t just my hope, I was told it was going to happen like this”. Unfortunately for him, things ended up being different.

“And they made the decision: no, you will not be responsible”. A choice which obviously affected him a lot at the time but which, with hindsight, undoubtedly turned out to be much better for him. Because the fact is that after the success of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimthings have changed a lot at Bethesda. Particularly with regard to the role of lead designer, which seems to have become increasingly “bureaucratic” with time. “So maybe they made the right decision in saying that [je] should not be in this position [sur The Elder Scrolls 6] ».

A studio that has changed a lot

But it was still a big blow for Kuhlmann who, beyond seeing his dream job taken away, above all saw Bethesda evolving in a direction that he didn’t really like. Because long before its acquisition by Xbox, transformed by the phenomenal success of Skyrim, it was already experiencing some difficulty finding itself in the company’s mind. This therefore explains why he finally resigned in 2023, after more than twenty years of good and loyal service, definitively abandoning The Elder Scrolls 6 project.
