A brand new project has just been announced, and it’s a cooperative game that may please fans of Split Fiction and It Takes Two. But be careful, there is a twist.
Cooperative games for two have been on the rise in recent years, particularly since the release of titles like It Takes Two et Split Fiction. If you like these two games from Hazelight studio, a new project just announced by another studio might interest you. It also highlights collaboration between two players, with asymmetrical gameplay and original mechanics. But if you were expecting to play as humans, you might be surprised.
Imagine Split Fiction, but with two remote-controlled cars
WheelMatesit’s a brand new project freshly announced by the independent studio FireVoltinspired by cooperative games like Split Fiction et It Takes Two. It will also ask two players to communicate and cooperate to move forward in the environment, except that this time we will control two remote-controlled cars. The young studio also explains having eyed old titles like Re-Volta racing game classic released in 1999 and still fondly remembered by many players.
In WheelMatesthe two small remote-controlled cars find themselves stuck in the strange house of a professor who has disappeared. It is therefore imperative to work together to find a path, the house being filled with inventions, puzzles and surprising experiences. The game announces complementary abilities for both players, such as magnetic wheels, cables for swinging and various hidden bonuses in the levels.
The first images of the game hint at gameplay oriented towards the archwith dynamic driving and plenty of opportunities to find yourself in the air, or even completely upside down. We will thus be able to use the different powers of our remote-controlled cars to progress through the rooms of this labyrinthine house, the studio even explaining that it has hidden several secret paths and alternative routes to reward the most curious pilots.
The idea of a cooperative game like Split Fiction with two cars is rather original, especially since the creators of WheelMates seem to want to do a little more than “replace our feet with wheels”. The project does not yet have a precise release date but should appear in 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series and Steam. A first playtest will also allow us to try the game from February on PC.
