11 years after its release, an RPG sharing many similarities with Baldur’s Gate 3 is getting an update that could greatly change the situation.
Originally the product of two legendary BioWare games, Baldur’s Gate 3 was placed in the hands of Larian Studios after its masterful Original Sin series to produce the masterpiece that we know, greatly reviving interest in “old-school” C-RPGs and video game adaptations of the rules of Dungeons & Dragons. Before him, another direct descendant of the BioWare license was emulated when it was released in 2015: Pillars of Eternity. 11 years later, the Obsidian Entertainment studio is launching a major update which brings significant changes to this other flagship of the genre after a long period of testing.
A pillar of the C-RPG precursor to Baldur’s Gate 3 gets up to date
After releasing last year AvowedGrounded 2 Early Access and The Outer Worlds 2Obsidian returns once again to one of its greatest games, which at the time was intended to be a spiritual child of BioWare’s legendary Baldur’s Gate with Pillars of Eternity. This title in fact included all the codes, including the camera angle and gameplay based on real-time combat with tactical pause. 11 years later, Obsidian is offering it a makeover by removing a major update from its beta.
This notably brings to Pillars of Eternity a feature that is very popular with C-RPG fans today: the ability to manage turn-based combat. It thus joins other major C-RPGs of recent years embracing this gameplay such as Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios or the series of Pathfinder from Owlcat Games. In addition to turn-based combat, this Pillars of Eternity update adds several features such as free turns, more intuitive free actions, a faster pace in combat, and the ability to freely switch from Real Time to Turn-Based mode for greater fluidity.
Thanks to this update, Pillars of Eternity therefore positions itself as a great alternative to Baldur’s Gate 3 if you have never tried it or if the title of Larian has transmitted the old-style C-RPG virus to you. Note, however, that this update is currently in public betawith Obsidian working on fine-tuning the set before the deployment of a full version at a date still undetermined.
