This open-world “fantasy-style GTA” could have been the next sensation after Crimson Desert, but its publisher made a sad decision

In parallel with Crimson Desert, we recently learned that a “GTA-like fantasy” was in development by another studio, but will unfortunately never see the light of day.

While console players wait feverishly GTA 6 at the end of the year, Crimson Desert has allowed some to have the closest thing to an alternative to an adventure game in a vast open world sandbox, although the criminal component of the Pearl Abyss title is quite limited. According to a report from our Korean colleagues at MTNanother well-known South Korean studio was working on a fantastic open-world adventure game closer to the experience of Rockstar Games games. But these promising beginnings on paper unfortunately belong a priori to the past.

A fantastic GTA-like, but a priori only on paper

So this makes the second report of an ambitious open-world game that will ultimately never exist. Not long ago, we learned thatAvalanche Studios (Just Cause) was working on an equivalent to Crimson Desert more than 15 years ago, but never found a publisher. This time, it’s about another Korean studio which intended to offer a GTA-like experience in a fantastic universe, but which a priori will never have reason to exist either.

The studio in question is NEXONwho recently developed and edited The First Descendantan equivalent of Destiny 2, but which now seems in difficulty, or the solid Souls-Like The First Berzerker Khazan as editor. MTL reports that this studio was also working on what could amount to a marriage between GTA 6 and Crimson Desert in a vast fantasy open world, codenamed Project EL. Unfortunately, after two years of development, NEXON decided to stop the fees, without knowing the precise reason behind this decision.

However, this leaves a more or less substantial team having worked on this “GTA-like fantasy” with Korean sauce on the sidelines. According to the MTL report, the studio could soon experience big changes following the assumption of the position of executive president by Patrick Söderlund, CEO of Embark Studios (Arc Raiders). The future will tell us what it really is, but a priori without a project which presented a certain potential, but a priori condemned to the Abyss.
