Do you dream of seeing a collaboration between Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and Magic: The Gathering see the light of day? You are not alone: the creators of the card game dream of it too!
If there is one game that has been at the center of all attention over the last few months, it is Chiaroscuro Expedition 33. Indeed, just look at the list of nominees for Game Awards 2025 to see it: with twelve nominations spread across ten different categories, Sandfall Interactive’s RPG undoubtedly stands out as one of this year’s biggest successes. No wonder, therefore, that some creators now hope to have the chance to collaborate with the French studio in the future.
A Clair Obscur x Magic crossover? The creators of the card game dream of it
This is, for example, particularly the case of Gavin Verhey, principal designer on Magic: The Gatheringwho confirmed in the columns of Dexerto that he dreams of being able to work on a crossover between Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and the card game. “I mean, it’s the talk of the year, right?” Clair Obscur Expedition 33 would be really fun to do” he assures. « [Mais] who knows if that will happen, or if they’re ready for that sort of thing.” he adds, however, as if to temper fans’ expectations a little.
However, as Verhey explains, the title of Sandfall could lend itself perfectly to such an exercise. “My general theory lately is that video game brands are just great collaborations for Magic. When you bring new people in with a game collaboration, they are already gamers. You don’t need to explain to them what hit points are, what an objective is, what mana represents. They already understand everything”.
This explains why in recent years, Magic has been keen to increase collaborations with big names in video games, such as Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, Assassin’s Creed, FalloutWarhammer, Sonic or even PlayStation. Will Clair Obscur Expedition 33 be next on the list? We ignore it. But Verhey certainly remains hopeful. “I think there is a lot of potential in this area, and I hope we do more of it in the future”. The message got through. The ball is now in Sandfall’s court.
