The success of Clair Obscur could continue thanks to a sequel which is slowly taking shape at the heart of the French studio Sandfall Interactive. The team already shares their vision.
Voted game of the year 2025, Chiaroscuro Expedition 33 could just be the beginning of a long adventure. The universe imagined by Sandfall still contains many unexplored aspects. Fans are already doubling down on theories about what a sequel could look like. But how does the studio see things? The teams, always asked for interviews, share their state of mind and already give an idea of how they will approach the future.
New pressure after the success of Clair Obscur
No one could have predicted such enthusiasm. Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is undoubtedly THE revelation of 2025. Even if theyear was filled with great new productsthe title of Sandfall was at the heart of all the attention and quickly saw its success in esteem coupled with commercial success crowned with numerous awards along its path.
From then on, fans quickly dreamed of a sequel. However, their hope could come true. Sandfall has already confirmed that “Clair Obscur” was intended to become a franchise. The studio is therefore considering sequels or, in any case, other adventures in this universe. And he intends to remain on the same dynamic as for the first part, not only by keeping a effective similar but also the same state of mind.
Indeed, François Meurissethe co-founder of the studio, assured in an interview for Edge magazine that they were keen to follow ” what they think is cool » for the sequel to Clair Obscur and the studio’s future projects:
We have time to fully focus on the next game. We have some great ideas that we can’t wait to explore, knowing that we’re not starting from the same place. The team already has five years of experience, so maybe we can do big things.
François Meurisse, in issue n°419 of Edge.
Of course, Meurisse does not hide a “ pression » news after the success of the “first” Clair Obscur. But this is not what should direct their creativity. By his side for this interview, the screenwriter Jennifer Svedberg-Yen assures that they are well aware of having many fans now and that they have expectations. However, they will have to manage to distance themselves from it in order to go in the direction that seems to them to be the right one to produce a good game:
I’ve seen too many series and books go astray by trying to please everyone, to the point of losing their very essence. So we think we have to trust our instincts and continue to rely on the studio’s vision.
Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, in Edge issue #419.
This is an ambivalent position on Sandfall’s part, which will ultimately require a solid proposal. By turning away from fans’ expectationsthe sequel to Clair Obscur could disappoint more than one. That said, the studio proved with its first attempt that it was right to follow its instinct. Now, only the future will tell us if he will be able to transform the test by taking new risks.
