Cyberpunk 2077: after more than 2 years, the developers destroy a fan theory

A theory widely spread among Cyberpunk 2077 fans for more than two years is finally officially dismantled by the developers themselves.

More precisely, it is again Igor Sarzyński, director of cinematics on Cyberpunk 2077who recently revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets of CD Projekt RED’s latest game. After revealing the creative and narrative process behind the Prologue and Act 1 and in passing disassembled a popular opinion among fans, Sarzyński explained a marketing choice that has been debated within the community since the release of the expansion Phantom Liberty.

V-olte Face assumed for the V-isage of Cyberpunk 2077

Initially, the promotion of Cyberpunk 2077 exclusively highlighted the basic male version of V, the character that we play, but whose appearance we can obviously modify in our own game. It was then the “face” of the game, both in the trailers and for the promotional images or even the different covers of the game. That, and of course partly also Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves.

Then, around the release of Phantom Liberty, the face of Cyberpunk 2077 changed to this time highlight the female version of V. Many fans then denounced a form of “ effacement » or « suppression » of its male counterpart. Just recently, Igor Sarzyński responded to a fan about this via his personal Bluesky account. “ The male version of V had the entire base game to himself. With Phantom Liberty, we decided to reverse things. A game for each V, basically “. The idea was therefore that Vincent, his real first name, would be the face of Cyberpunk 2077, and that Valerie would be the face of its expansion.

Note that it was said that it was the female version of V who was the star of the famous long gameplay demo at E3 2019, and that she then changed her appearance before the final release of the game. At the same time, it was with her as the face of Cyberpunk 2077 that the game had better press, with the double release in 2023 of the excellent Phantom Liberty expansion, but also of the 2.0 update of the base game, coming drastically improve the overall experience, which was quite chaotic when it debuted in 2020.
