Divinity will have a feature that even Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t have. This will be a first for the studio

If the next Divinity will allow Larian to push all its limits, it will also allow the studio to try new game mechanics for the first time.

The first weeks following the announcement of Divinity at the Game Awards 2025 may not have been all rosy for Larian Studios, but one thing is certain: the latter knows how to turn the situation in its favor. For several days, the great successor of Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to be talked about, thanks in particular to a big question-and-answer session organized by the teams on Reddit. Enough to allow us to know more about what this future Divinity has in store for us, therefore, with the teasing of a big new thing.

Divinity will introduce a new mechanic for the studio

Because yes, if this new opus will allow Larian to offer players a character creator even more advanced, but also different modding tools intended for the PC community; it will also allow the studio to implement completely new mechanics for it. In any case, this is what Nick Pechenin, head of design on the next Divinity, revealed in response to one of the Internet users asking him what new mechanics he was most proud of on the project so far.

“There was something that bothered me when I explored the starting areas of Divinity Original Sin 1, Original Sin 2 et Baldur’s Gate 3 » then begins by entrusting the developer. “It jumps out at you if you think about it. In Divinity, I can finally do the thing I wanted to do in all the previous games”. Unfortunately, Pechenin is careful not to say more for the moment, leaving players to speculate on the famous mechanic that could be in question.

A first big theory emerges

And one of the theories that tends to come up the most is the fact of being able to swim. Because as players of Larian’s productions will have noticed, both Divinity and Baldur’s Gate 3 all start in the same way: in areas surrounded by water. “I think subconsciously I always found it odd that all three games left you on the beach, but didn’t let you swim in that clear, beautiful water.” then notes one of the most popular replies to the developer’s post.

“Swimming confirmed”says another very popular comment. Of course, some Reddit users do not hesitate to have fun with this theory, evoking for example the fact that this new Divinity will have “so still a starting area on the beach”or that Larian could include “mechanics of building sandcastles” for the occasion. “A fishing mini-game? Every great game needs a fishing mini-game! » finally declares another of the answers. But what is it really? We’ll have to wait to find out.
