Next September, Blizzard will finally bring back its famous BlizzCon conference and will be preparing, after more than 10 years, the return of one of its best licenses, at least according to a leak.
After three years of absence, Blizzard will once again invite its fans to gather in Anaheim or via a live broadcast on the occasion of the BlizzCon 2026. Between 2023 and today, the American giant has indeed experienced significant changes, including its takeover by Microsoft, and also, unfortunately, several waves of layoffs and cancellations, such as its new survival game license. Which definitely had an impact on his future projects. But 2026, which will also mark the studio’s 35th anniversary, could well be the year of redemption, particularly for an emblematic license, which has not given any signs of life for 10 years, if a recent leak is to be believed.
« Damn it’s about time » for a Blizzard Star license?
If Blizzard finally feels ready to hold a new BlizzCon conference after so many years of absence, it’s probably because it has some important announcements in store. If Diablo 4 will have already been entitled to its second Lord of Hatred expansion before, it could announce a new one, while Warcraft, Overwatch or even Hearthstone should also have big new features to present. According to a recent Jez Corden report at Windows Central, however, it would be another flagship license from the American giant which could occupy a “ BlizzCon 2026 central place » coming in September: StarCraft.
As a reminder, a return of Blizzard’s cult science fiction franchise has been the subject of rumors for a while, starting in particular in the book ” Play Nice […] » by Jason Schreier. However, there was no question of a new RTS, but rather of a shooter, which could therefore be a form of resurrection of StarCraft Ghostsadly canceled in 2006. We also learned after the publication of Schreier’s book that the studio was recruiting a Design Director in Innovation pour « an unannounced open world shooter ».
Besides StarCraft Remastered en 2017the license did not have no sign of life since Legacy of the Void, the third expansion for StarCraft 2 (originally released in 2010), in 2015. It would therefore be high time for Blizzard to call Jim Raynor, Sarah Kerrigan, Nova, Zeratul and the whole gang to the rescue to ensure a great return to BlizzCon. However, we should wait for more official confirmations to be sure.
