The subject of numerous theories since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, this mystery left by Nintendo has now been answered thanks to the game’s creators.
Failing that, they have great regret from Nintendo, to have the opportunity to embark on a new opus of The Legend of Zelda on Nintendo Switch 2 for the moment, fans of the franchise were able to enjoy the release ofHyrule Warriors: The Seal Chronicles to embark on what serves as a prequel to the events of Tears of the Kingdom. And although Koei Tecmo’s title may not be unanimously unanimous among fans, due in particular to the nature of its gameplay, it at least has the merit of providing answers to some of the mysteries left unanswered.
The creators of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom finally answer this mystery that has been plaguing fans
Indeed, if you have played Tears of the Kingdom since its release, then you will probably have noticed that Nintendo has ignored the identity of the Ancient Sages, who all appear masked and nameless during the adventure. Obviously, this pushed players to come up with numerous theories on this subject, in particular to try to understand why the studio chose to cultivate a certain mystery around these great figures. A mystery which, thanks to the new Hyrule Warriors, is now beginning to be clarified.
Because in addition to providing the first elements of an answer via the plot of the game, the release of the Chronicles of the Seal also allowed Nintendo to return to the question in the columns of the Japanese media 4Gamer. And against all expectations, it turns out that the explanation around this mystery is actually much less complex than we could imagine. « In the main story of Tears of the Kingdom, there was a central narrative axis to respect » reveals Hidemaro Fujibayashi, the game’s director, on this subject.
« The wise men appear there without their names being revealed, their faces hidden behind masks. If we had detailed their personality or appearance too much, the story would have stretched too far, which led us to deliberately limit these elements ». As you will have understood, it is less out of a desire to create a mystery than out of a desire for rhythm that the creators of Zelda decided to ignore the identity of the Ancient Sages in Tears of the Kingdom. An aspect which, instead, has been deepened thanks to the new Hyrule Warriors, which Fujibayashi says “really delighted”.
A new fruitful collaboration
However, make no mistake: at the time, Nintendo had not yet planned the production of The Seal Chronicles. It would therefore be a mistake to think that the plot of the Ancient Sages was deliberately left aside in order to be handled by Koei Tecmo in this new Hyrule Warriors. In fact, it seems to be more of a happy coincidence, motivated by the discovery of Tears of the Kingdom by the studio’s producer, Yosuke Hayashi.
“I played it the weekend after its release. And at one point, I had the very clear feeling that the game itself was sending us a message: ‘Create a new Zelda Musou set in the era of the Seal War.’ From the beginning of the next week, I said to Matshushita: ‘Let’s do it.’ So we started working on a proposal”.
Yosuke Hayashi, producer at Koei Tecmo
A proposal which, you will have understood, therefore pleased Nintendo, which was also thinking of entrusting the reins of a new Hyrule Warriors to Koei Tecmo. The rest of the story, you know it. The Seal Chronicles saw the light of day, which notably allowed the studio to collaborate with Nintendo to deepen the lore of Tears of the Kingdom, to the delight of fans of the franchise.
