On the occasion of the release of Death Stranding 2, Hideo Kojima spoke of the future of his career, and this could take a very different turning point after the release of Physint.
On June 26, Hideo Kojima made a thunderous return with Death Stranding 2: On the Beachcontinued acclaimed from his work could not be more atypical released in 2019. On this occasion, the creator then engaged in numerous interviews with the media around the world, with which he notably returned behind the scenes of game development, his career, but also his future projects. And to believe the latter, his days in the video game industry could now be counted.
Hideo Kojima would be ready to leave video games for cinema
So, we reassure you right away: no, no fatal reason hides behind this declaration. Kojima may well, on his own confession, having gone through a difficult period during the COVID-19, the 61-year-old creator now seems to be worn as a charm, and he does not intend to stop working anytime soon. To tell the truth, it is even rather the opposite. Because if he actually evokes the possibility of moving away from the world of video games in the future, it would be to concretize one of his dreams since always: to make a film.
This is in any case what he entrusted to our colleagues from Brut, in an interview carried out on the occasion of his visit to France last month. “I grew up watching a lot of films, and I hope one day to make it myself. I created my production studio, Kojima Productions, but if I make a film, I should be away for 2 or 3 years, which is not possible because the studio would no longer advance “ reveals Kojima notably, before recalling that after Death Stranding 2, two other games must still arrive: OF et Physint.
“But once these projects are finished, I will see what it is in the studio and I will think about the possibility of making a film”he continues then. However, the creator remains aware that the more the years pass, the more difficult it can be for him to be on all fronts while he ages. Especially at a time when game production cycles tend to last at least five years. “So you will have to see when I have the strength to get involved in making a film” He finally concludes, without being categorical about the question.
That said, we are not going to lie: this is not a surprise for anyone. Whether through its various projects, such as Metal Gear Solidthe demo Pt of Silent Hills or Death Strandingbut also his many publications on social networks, Kojima has never hidden his love for cinema. At this point, it is moreover more surprising than anything that he never sought to take the plunge, if only by participating in the adaptation of his works as neil Druckmann could do with The Last of Us For example.
Because if a film Death Stranding was announced almost two years ago now, it has already been confirmed that it would not be made by Kojima itself. Of course, this will not prevent the creator from being involved in production, but it will not be his personal vision of the project, which will be overseen by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, without a noise: day 1). But perhaps, as he said at the microphone in Brut, he awaits the opportunity to be able to devote himself fully to definitively take the plunge.
In the meantime, that fans are reassured: Kojima still has great years ahead of him in the video game industry. Because between the development of OD, his horror game carried out in collaboration with Xbox, and that of Physint, his action-spying game produced in collaboration with PlayStation, the Japanese creator has a lot of work to do. And to believe the latter, physiint, who should more than ever mix “Video games and film transparently”could also be his springboard to enter the world of cinema. It looks like a well -offed plan, don’t you think?
