Two years after its announcement by CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, has just passed a new important step in its development.
We can say it, despite its more than chaotic launch, Cyberpunk 2077 was able to achieve a beautiful journey on the path of redemption. While its extension, Phantom Libertyhas today crosses the bar of ten million copies sold, the title of CD Projekt Red is now preparing to land on Nintendo Switch 2in a version that seems to be pleasantly surprising the players. And at the dawn of this outing, the studio has another good news to share concerning the franchise: things are moving on the side of Cyberpunk 2!
Cyberpunk 2 enters the pre-production phase
Because yes, the one who had been announced in October 2022 under the code name “Project Orion” has recently taken a new important step in its development. Now identified under the name of Cyberpunk 2 by CD Projekt, we learn on the occasion of the company’s latest financial report that the game has officially entered its pre-production phase.
A few weeks ago, the CD Projekt Red team, head of the next big game taking place in the Cyberpunk universe, finished the conceptual phase of the project. Consequently, Cyberpunk 2-Previously known as the Orion Project code name-, has passed in the pre-production phase.

Now, we prefer to warn you right away: that obviously does not mean that you have to expect an upcoming outing. Because as Michał Nowakowski, one of the bosses of the studio, once said it takes an average of four to five years to CD Projekt to bring a game of its pre-production phase to its release. In other words, Cyberpunk 2 should not be released before 2030 at the earliest, which is obviously not an exact science.
A long way to go
Currently, 96 of the 730 developers who make up the ranks of the Polish studio are allocated to the design of Cyberpunk 2. The others are then dispatched to different projects, the main one obviously being The Witcher 4whose production is currently in full swing with 422 developers. Because as we were able to teach Game Awards 2024, before we can plunge back into the streets of Night City or potentially from a new city looking for a “Chicago who would have gone wrong”new adventures in the world of witches will await us with Ciri.
