While GTA 6 is already shaping up to be one of the richest titles in history, Rockstar is also working on something huge for Online mode.
Of League of Legends from Fortnite to Counter-Strike and No Man’s Sky, games intended to last in the long term are today as numerous as they are varied. And sometimes, this can even apply to games that are unexpected to say the least. This is for example the case of GTA 5 which, on the strength of the phenomenal success encountered by GTA Onlinehas managed to go through no less than three generations of consoles without ever failing. A feat that, obviously, Rockstar Games intends to repeat with GTA 6at least if we are to believe the latest rumors of the moment.
GTA 6, a future MMORPG phenomenon?
Indeed, the studio’s communication may well be focused around the single-player campaign for the moment, but we suspect that Rockstar is not going to abandon anytime soon what has allowed it to sustain the success of GTA 5 for more than a decade. Therefore, the idea is not so much to know if GTA Online will be back with GTA 6, but rather to know when it will be back, and especially in what way. And thanks to our colleagues at Wccf Tech, we may have the first answers on this subject.
And for good reason, as part of a vast interview on the place of MMORPG among Western developers, the media was able to speak with several industry veterans, including a certain Rich Vogel, whose pedigree includes titles like Star Wars: The Old Republic, DOOM (2016), Halo Infinite and Gotham Knights. It was then on this occasion that the developer mentioned GTA 6, mentioning the fact that certain rumors tended to suggest that the game could evolve into a sort of MMORPG in the long term.
“Yes, I think a large audience is waiting for the arrival of the ideal MMORPG” he notably confided to Wccf Tech, who wondered if there was still an audience for the genre in the West. “The problem is that no publisher is willing to invest the money and take the risk at the moment. My gut tells me that the next MMORPG will probably come from Asia and/or Europe. If what I’ve heard about GTA 6’s features and gameplay is true, the game could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of the planned features are usually found there ».
Take out the tweezers
Of course, Vogel is careful not to say more on this subject. Needless to say, therefore, that this statement should be taken with a grain of salt. Because apart from the fact that the latter is not working in any way on GTA 6, Rockstar has not yet discussed its plans for the future of GTA Online. However, as Wccf Tech points out, the fact that the studio bought Cfx.re, aka the team behind the creation of MMORPG mods for GTA 5 multiplayer, in 2023 could be a big indicator in this direction.
But as always in this kind of situation, it remains very important to keep a certain distance from all this, at least until Rockstar officially speaks on this subject. That being said, one thing is certain: given the development time granted to GTA 6, but also the resources mobilized for its creation, the title will undoubtedly be entitled to many good and long years of exploitation by the studio. Now, to know what form this will take, we will have to wait for the game’s release, scheduled for November 19, 2026.
